With the project leadership of Bodrum Chamber of Commerce and significant contributions of Bodrum Municipality, the project made progress as ‘Exhibitions of Museum Project’ and was opened to the public in October 15, 2011 after the allocation of the former Bedesten building in the center of Bodrum as a Museum.

The Project began with the mastery construction of ‘Bodrum type’ boat models by Ali Kemal Denizaslanı, who is a great expert-artist from Bodrum.These boats have an important place in the economic, social and cultural life of the region in Bodrum and their 48 models are currently exhibited as constructed faithfully to their original forms.

On the second floor, a special section of ‘Hasan Güleşçi Seashell Collection’ was opened in December 23, 2011.Here is presented a rich and invaluable collection (up to 6000 seashells representing 168 families) composed of seashells collected by Hasan Güleşçi from different parts of the world in nearly 40 years.

According to Homer, having been the supporters of Troy together with the Carians during the Trojan War, the Leleges lived in the city of Pedasos in the south of Troy and after the Trojan War they moved to the south and settled in the vicinity of Halicarnassus of the Caria Region.  Having been mentioned along with the Carians during and after the Trojan War in ancient documents, the Leleges founded eight cities in the Region of Caria, on today’s Bodrum Peninsula. One of these important founded cities is Pedasa. Having said: "The people from Pedasa lived inland off the shore beyond Halicarnassus.", Herodotus gives the most important information regarding the location of Pedasa. The only city on Halicarnassus was Pedasa. This point of view was confirmed by an inscription, found in the Temple Terrace in 2008.

The Necropolis areas with the Acropolis, surrounded by walls in the settlement center, terraces for agricultural activities, farmhouses and all the parts forming Pedasa, a Lelegian city in its territory are present. Belonging to a period, which starts from the late 2nd millennium BC and dates back to the end of the Byzantine period (13th century BC), archaeological remains and finds have been brought to light by the excavations and researches carried out in Pedasa up to the present.

After the surface surveys in Pedesa ancient city, which is mentioned often in documents and for this reason well known, systematic archaeological excavations began since 2007.

Telmissos is on the Bodrum-Turgutreis road, three kilometers past Ortakent. The site is in the village of Gürece, which is two kilometers before the turn for Gümüşlük, with the hill where the remains are to be found to the north of the main road. You can see remains of the Hellenistic period, mainly the towers of the city's walls. The historian Herodotus said that the Temple of Apollo was found here and that it became famous for its oracles. However, no traces of the temple have survived.

Having been founded by the King Mausolos 2. to settle the people of Syangela in, the ancient city of Thaengela is located on the hill 1.5 km above the village of Etrim in the vicinity of the Village of Pınarlıbelen on the Mumcular-Bodrum road. The route from the village up to the hill is quite steep and hiking takes time to reach it. It is worth seeing the ruins on the hill for those who are interested in archaeology. But if you want to hike for sports, on condition that the weather is not hot and you have time, such exploration might be interesting to see. The remains of the walls and towers are catching the attention like the ones in other Lelegian cities among the remains from the settlement, survived to the present time. Moreover, you shall find remains from a structure similar like Stadion, monumental tombs, public structures, settlement-structures, wells and cisterns in the ancient city, which carries the traces of the Hellenistic Civilization.

The Ottoman Shipyard is estimated to have been established in 1775. According to a document found in the archives, the construction of the first ship started in 1784. The wood for these boats was brought in from the mountains in the local vicinity. The Ottoman Tower, fortified against pirate attacks and the walls of the shipyard were extended in 1882. The tower serves today as an Art Gallery.

Today, behind the old shipyard there is an Ottoman Cemetery with the tombs of the Ottoman sailor Cafer Pasha and an anonymous horseman.

At the present time, the wooden boats built in small-scale shipyards at many locations of the Bodrum peninsula have become passion of local and foreign marine lovers.

The Ottoman shipyard is located at the northwest of the Bodrum Harbour and Karaada ( Black Island) is located at the west of  the Marina.

Aspat Castle is on the peaks of the conical hill overlooking the Aspat Bay of Akyarlar and the ancient settlement of Termera is on the Hill of Asarlık, 1 km above Mandra Village, which is 2 km far away. There is no road between Aspat and the village of Mandra, hence the distance can be reached on foot. However the village of Mandra is reachable by car by following the road starting from the Village of Gürece, where Telmissos is located.

The ancient city of Termera is like other Lelegian cities and there are hardly any remains left, which have survived to this day. The inner castle at the peak was completely destroyed and a part of the walls on the slope are still remaining.

The two ancient tombs of Halicarnassus are located near the Gates of Myndos and Mylasa. Animal reliefs were found on some of the tombs’ surfaces unearthed during the road construction works in recent years.

The tomb of the Queen of Caria Ada, exhibited in Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, is one of these tombs. It is possible to see one of these ancient tombs inside the CarrefourSA Store on the Bodrum - Turgutreis road.

An  epigraph among the ruins of Roman walls and mosaics was discovered by archaeologists during a military construction in Bardakci Cove. It was discovered that the epigraph, in which the “Reputable Writers and Poets Born In Halicarnassus, Artemisia Is Proud of” were narrated was a poem belonging to Hellenistic period. The remains of the Salmakis Fountain can still be seen in Gümbet Military Beach today, but no trace of the Salmakis Temple has been found. The Temple of Salmakis is thought to be on the cape where the old Turkish arsenal is located. A Fresh water spring in the harbor near Cape Arsenal is thought to have fed the Fountain of Salmakis, which is not certain as no excavation has been carried out.

The ruins of the ancient city ‘Syangela-Souagele’ are located on the side of the Gokova Gulf on the peninsula, on the top of the hill above the Neighborhood of Alazeytin in Çiftlik Village. From the end of the neighborhood to the hill, where the ruins are located, the ancient city is reached by a 20-minute walk through the olive groves. The ruins, survived to the present time are walls, houses and other structures. Gokova Gulf and Orak Island can be seen on the hill.

The adventure of mankind in Bodrum is said to have a history stretching back over  3000 years. Historian Herodotos from Bodrum (484 BC) wrote that the city was founded by the Dorians in 1.000 BC,  where the castle is located today. His writing says that Back then, this place was an island.

The Carians came under the rule of the Lydians in the 6th century BC and then they came under the rule of the Persians. Persians divided Anatolia into various satrapies. The Caria Region was ruled by the Hekatomnus Dynasty. Mausolos moved the capital of the Carian Satrapy from Mylasa to Halicarnassus and had the city redeveloped. Halicarnassus lived its brightest period in these years. During his 24-year rule, Mausolos started to build the monumental tomb known as the Mausoleion, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. After his death, his sister-wife Artemisia II.  continued building of the monument.

In 334 BC, the Macedonian King Alexander the Great conquered the lands in Anatolia under Persian rule. Being burned and destroyed by Alexander, the city could not recover. After the death of Alexander, the region was ruled by his generals for a period of time , then came under the rule of the Ptolemaic dynasty and Rhodes; but Halicarnassus preserved its independence like other coastal cities. In 133 BC, when the Romans as the heir of the Pergamon Kingdom established the Asian State in Anatolia, Caria was included in this state. After the division of Rome into two (324 AC), it became a bishopric under the Aphrodisias Metropolis.

The city was captured by the Turks in the last quarter of the 11th century, and became part of  the Menteşe Beylik in the 13th century. By the conquest of Rhodes by Suleiman the Magnificent, Bodrum became part of the territory of the Ottoman Empire. It was occupied by the Italians at the end of the First World War (May 11, 1919), and the Italian occupation ended in the War of Independence (05.07.1921).

The Name Bodrum Derives From the Knights of St. Petronium

The name Bodrum comes from the founders of St. Peter Castle, the knights of St. Petronium. It comes from the Petrium knights. At that time, this name, pronounced as ‘Bodrum’ by the Turks living here, remained as Bodrum with the establishment of the Republic.

Having had a population of approximately 5000 in the first years of the Republic, Bodrum, was used to be known as a small port town making its living by fishing, sponge diving and agriculture before tourism.With the development of tourism since 1965, population growth and urban development started to make Bodrum a rapidly developing tourism center. Today, Bodrum is a tourism center in the most special and beautiful geography of the world,  distinguished by its cultural and historical richness and increasing its attraction with these features of itself.

Myndos Gate is reputed to be built in 360 BC. It is the one of the entrance gates of the city, located in the west of Halicarnassus. The Myndos Gate was built by the Carian Satrap Mausolos nearly as a shield on the city walls.Being one of two monumental gates of Halicarnassus, Myndos Gate consists of two monumental towers and behind these an inner courtyard where the gate to enter the city is located.The first part of the renovation of the city walls and the towers located in the north side of this gate was completed in 1999.

The ditches, which neutralized the attacks of Alexander the Great’s army on Halicarnassus in 334 BC.  were constructed in the 4th century.

In the area where historical remains are located, there are vaulted tombs from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, which are thought to belong to the 4th century.

History and art have become intertwined…

At the southern foot of Göktepe mountain in the middle of Bodrum Peninsula, this theater is one of the oldest theaters in Anatolia. Having been restored by a group of Turks in the 1960s, the theater hosts many festival events. Tourists who come to see the theater do not realize how those pleasant hours pass while they sit there and watch the boats leaving and approaching the harbor.

Among the interesting characteristics of the theater we can collocate the altar where the victims were sacrificed for the sake of Dionysus before the plays and the holes, maybe used as canopy in between some seats. With a distance of 40 cm between each seat, the theatre has a capacity of 13.000. You can see the tombstones carved out of stone during a short climb to Göktepe Mountain. This carved tombstones from the Roman and Hellenistic Period still bears ancient time’s death symbols and various sarcophaguses (some remains are still exhibited in the Castle Museum).

Being one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, Mausoleum is the monumental tomb of the King Mausolos of Caria. Having been started to be built by the King Mausolos, the Satrap of Caria under Persian dominion during his lifetime, the construction of Mausoleum was continued after Mausolos’ death by his wife and sister Artemisia. Therefore it is named after King Mausolos.

Being one of the most significant rulers of his age, Mausolos decided to build this monumental tomb to immortalize himself through this venture. This monumental tomb in the heart of Halicarnassus , of which construction continued by his sister-wife Queen Artemisia II. for King Mausolos is a unique wonder structure of that time.The Structure survived for centuries; but much of the structure was destroyed by the Anatolia earthquake on August 8, 1304. Afterwards, the stones of what existed of the structure was taken away to build and fortify St Peter's Castle (later Bodrum castle). Moreover in 1857,  the remaining relief sculptures and statues of the tomb were transported by British archaeologists to the British Museum.

For this unique structure built with an extraordinary architecture that challenged the architectural styles of its time, The Fisherman of Halicarnassus (Halikarnas Balıkçısı) had written the following about the Mausoleum’s architecture with his own wording: “Think once! Kicking aside all tradition and doing a completely new thing… It would drive someone insane! Just thinking about this challenge, a trumpet and drum thrill me.”.

Having been considered as one of the seven wonders of the world, the Mausoleum was a gigantic tomb, which combined Greek architecture with its columns and Egyptian architecture with its pyramid-shaped roof. Because of this significance of the Mausoleum, all structures in the same architectural style that built after it were called mausoleums. This open-air museum is an important resource to understand the culture and life of those days.

Ancient writers wrote that the structure’s architecture was also the architect of the Temple of Athena, Pytheos. Vitrivius had said that the most important sculptors of their time such as Bryaxis, Timotheos, Leochares and Skopas had worked in the construction of this structure in 4. century B.C.. Being originally from Karya, Bryaxis had made the statues of Mausolos and Artemisia riding the four-horse chariot at the very top of the mausoleum.

The Bodrum Castle (Castle of St. Peter or Petronium) was built by the Knights of St John between 1406-1522 on a small rocky peninsula set between two sheltered harbors in Bodrum. In the construction of the castle, the stones of Mausoleion, which was one of the seven wonders of the world and demolished due to an earthquake  were used. The Bodrum Castle (Castle of St. Peter or Petronium) has towers known as the French, Italian, English, German and Spanish (The Snake Tower) bearing the names of the nations responsible for their construction. After the island of Rhodes was taken over by the Turks in 1522, the knights left Bodrum and its surrounding territory on January 5., 1523.  Being  used as a prison for a period of time since 1895, the castle turned to ruin due to bombing of the French and English forces on May 26-28, 1915, during World War I. and was abandoned.

Except the the walls of  the castle on the east side, those on the other sides were fortified as double walls. There are seven gates leading to the keep inside the castle and studded coats of arms above the Gates of the moats. There are crucifixes, flat - horizontal belts, dragon and lion figures on the coats of arms. Including the basement of the chapel, there are 14 cisterns in the inner stronghold. The castle pillbox, the ditch between double walls, drawbridge, watch tower and the tughra of Sultan Mahmut II. are marvels to behold in the castle.

During the period of that the Bodrum Castle was used  as a prison at the end of the 19th century, it was ascribed Ottoman character with the addition of a turkish bath.Today The castle is used as the ‘Museum of Underwater Archaeology’.
